RONCOPATHY

RONCOPATHY or CHRONIC SNORING is a clinical picture characterized by discontinuous snoring, at times very noisy, which may be accompanied by disturbed sleep and/or disturbed respiration.

The characteristic noise of snoring is due to the vibration of organs and structures where air passes during respiration: the soft palate, uvula, the back wall of the throat, tonsils,  tongue and epiglottis.

It is very important to intercept this particular situation because according to numerous recent studies, it has been seen that it could be the alarm signal of two important pathologies:

  1. CHRONIC RONCOPATHY
  2. SYNDROME OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNOEA (OSA)

CHRONIC RONCOPATHY

Patients that suffer from discontinuous and noisy snoring in the long run will manifest disturbed sleep symptoms. Reduced oxygenation of the organism causes difficult awakening, morning tiredness, recurring headaches.

Heavy chronic roncopathy is frequently the cause of night apnoea. If the person who suffers from it lives alone, as usually happens in these cases, he may not be aware of it even for several years. It must not be forgotten that snoring also disturbs the sleep of those who live with the person in question.

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNOEA SYNDROME (OSAS)

This is a very serious pathology (more than a million people suffer from it in Italy)  due to the cardiovascular and neurological consequences and the ever increasing road accidents (22% in Italy).

With the syndrome of night apnoea, the patient has a discontinuous sleepcharacterized by frequent moments of re-awakening, agitation and continuous change of position.

Strong violent snoring is alternated by silent phases, preceded frequently by gasping when the patient cannot breathe (apnoea), then the re-awakening.

It has been shown that OSAS is frequently associated with a series of systemic  pathologies which have increased significantly in the last decade, for example: cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. It is calculated that over 40,000 road accidents a year are caused by “lack of sleep”.

Typical symptoms of sufferers are characterized by:

  • Sensation of “not having rested well”
  • Headache in the morning
  • Tiredness and sleepiness during the day
  • Concentration problems
  • Irritability and loss of memory
  • Vertigo
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Loss of sexual appetite leading to impotence.

CAUSE AND PREDISPOSING FACTORS

All the main causes of OSA  must be considered. The obstructive pathologies of the air passages  – nasal, nasopharyngeal and laryngeal  must therefore be properly diagnosed and treated.

However, there are some important causes which should be kept under control;

  • Mandibular retrognathia
  • Short bull neck
  • Obesity
  • Abuse of food, alcohol and tobacco
  • Hormone change (hypothyroidism)
  • Stress and tiredness
  • Use of sedatives and sleeping pills
  • Familiarity

The complications of this syndrome can strongly affect the cardiovascular system (arterial hypertension, heart attack), the neurocerebral system (Stroke, TIA) and the broncho-pulmonary system. It can also be the cause  of alteration of hormones  and sexual systems and of metabolic syndromes (insulin dependent diabetes).

It is therefore important to not underestimate a problem which may seem apparently harmless like snoring. It must be identified at its early stages and treated in order to prevent more serious consequences.

Due to the numerous clinical situations existing, it is essential to make the patient understand that the therapeutic approach must absolutely be multidisciplinary and requires  close collaboration between doctors specializing in sleep (pulmonologists, ENT specialist) and SOMNODENT certified dentists.

Omniadent centre is certified to implement the Somnodent system, recognized worldwide as  a functional device suitable for improving roncopathy and night apnoea .

It is possible at our centre to carry out an individual objective assessment, which will allow the most suitable solution to be adopted in each specific case.

RONCOPATHY  TREATMENT

The main aim for treating  roncopathy, in particular OSAS, is to increase the capacity of the air passages. To this end, we use a specific dental aid called “SOMNODENT”.

Somnodent is a mandibular advancement device made to the patient’s measurements, therefore comfortable, consisting of a superior and inferior plaque.
